More to Know

What is congenital dermal melanocytosis? Congenital dermal melanocytosis is a flat, bluish-gray or bluish-green birthmark. They're often found on the lower back, buttocks, or shoulders of newborns. The birthmark can cover a large area of the skin and have an irregular shape. The skin of the birthmark does not feel different from the skin around it. This type of birthmark is common in Asian, Native American, East Indian, African, and Hispanic infants. It doesn't cause any problems, and doesn't require any testing or treatment. It fades and usually disappears on its own in the first several years of life.
