Urethritis is inflammation (swelling and irritation) of the urethra. The urethra is the tube that carries urine (pee) out of the body. Your child's urethritis is likely caused by irritation to the urethra. Follow these instructions to help them feel better.

• Use only fragrance-free, gentle bathing products.
• If possible, have your child take a shower instead of a bath. 
• If they must take a bath, your child should:
  • Avoid bubble baths.
  • Use soap or body wash, shampoo, and conditioner only at the end of the bath. This way, they're not sitting in water with bath products in it.
• Whether your child showers or takes a bath, be sure they rinse the urethral area well with clear water at the end of bathing and then dry gently with a clean towel.
• When doing laundry:
  • Use unscented laundry detergent.
  • Rinse underwear twice to remove all detergent.
  • Don't use fabric softener.
  • If you use dryer sheets, use an unscented product.
• Teach your child to:
  • If female, wipe from front to back, especially after a bowel movement (poop).
  • Avoid staying in a wet swimsuit for long periods of time.
  • Avoid tight clothing like tights and leggings.
• If your health care provider says it's OK, your child can take acetaminophen (Tylenol^® or a store brand) or ibuprofen (Advil^®, Motrin^®, or a store brand) to help with pain. Follow the package directions for how much to give and how often.
• Be sure your child drinks plenty of fluids.

Your child:

• doesn't get better after following the health care provider's instructions
• has worsening irritation of the urethra
• has belly pain or pain when peeing
• has discharge from the urethra

What causes urethritis in children? Urethritis in young kids usually is due to irritation from soap, bubble bath, laundry detergent, trauma, or not cleaning well after going to the bathroom. Less often, it's caused by an infection.

What are the signs and symptoms of urethritis from irritation? Urethritis from irritation usually leads to itching and discomfort of the urethra. Less often, it can lead to pain when peeing.
